Sony Pictures and Lionsgate have officially forged a co-production partnership to bring Masashi Kishimoto's legendary franchise to live action, locking in a spring 2027 filming start date under director Destin Daniel Cretton. According to verified reports from IGN Articles, Lionsgate will spearhead physical production alongside domestic theatrical distribution, while Sony Pictures leverages its global reach and Crunchyroll anime ecosystem to manage international distribution. Cretton, renowned for directing Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, confirmed his commitment to capturing the core heart, humor, and ninja combat mechanics that defined Kishimoto's original manga run.
