Breaking Overview & Situation Report

South Korean esports titan KIWOOM DRX has officially released seven active players and three coaching staff members across its main and academy rosters after Riot Games unexpectedly omitted the iconic organization from the next era of VCT partnership. According to verified reporting from VLR.gg, the dramatic purge terminates the contracts of head coach Pyeon 'termi' Seon-ho and coach Kwon 'Argency' Soon-woo, both foundational leaders dating back to the legendary Vision Strikers era. On the server, franchise anchor Kim 'MaKo' Myeong-gwan departs alongside starters Kang 'BeYN' Ha-bin, No 'free1ng' Ha-jun, and Song 'HYUNMIN' Hyun-min. MaKo served as DRX's longest-tenured competitor since July 2021, steering the organization through eleven international LAN appearances. Furthermore, DRX Academy absorbed severe structural cuts, parting ways with head coach Jung 'OD' Jin-myung and prospects Park 'Kyra' Jae-young, Lee 'apeX' Chan-min, and Shin 'Krexx' Jae-yong. The sweeping teardown ends one of competitive Valorant's most celebrated dynasties, leaving former regional champions without franchised status or salaried security ahead of the new competitive calendar.

Competitive & Tournament Impact

The departure of MaKo and termi instantly destabilizes DRX's trademark discipline, completely dismantling one of tactical shooter history's most cohesive utility playbooks. MaKo redefined controller pacing on Ascent and Haven, boasting microscopic smoke placement tolerances and elite clutch conversion under extreme time-to-kill duress. Without his disciplined anchoring on Viper and Omen, DRX loses over three seasons of coordinated crossfires and set piece retakes. For prospective tier-one suitors, snapping up free agents like HYUNMIN and BeYN provides immediate firepower injection, but rebuilding that innate telepathic chemistry will take months. DRX now faces a brutal path through tier-two Challengers and Pacific Ascension, where single-elimination formats severely punish mismatched map pools. Qualifying for international Masters without partnered seed protection drops their global qualification probability dramatically, forcing the remaining skeleton squad to rethink default round pacing, mid-round calling, and site containment schemes against mechanically dominant regional opponents.

Market & Ecosystem Relevance

DRX's franchise snub highlights the volatility of partnered esports, triggering immediate rippling effects across the player economy and secondary collectible trading. With DRX merchandise and brand interest facing a sudden transition, digital asset traders are flocking to vaulted cosmetics tied to historic international tournaments. Account marketplaces are recording aggressive spikes in inquiries for elite profiles featuring limited-edition VCT Champions Vandal skins, Lock-In knives, and authenticated peak Radiant ranks. On 217G, verified listings for these rare competitive bundles currently fluctuate between PKR 25,000 to PKR 90,000 (AED 350 to AED 1,200), reflecting heightened scarcity as discontinued team collections lock out new buyers. Much like navigating vulnerabilities exposed in [PUBG Mobile Account Recovery Bot Loops Exposed [Update 2026]](/news/pubg-mobile-account-recovery-loop-fix), Valorant account collectors rely heavily on 217G verified escrow protection to secure rare tournament cosmetics against retrieval fraud and market scalping.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 VCT Pacific campaign initiates in early February, leaving displaced DRX stars merely weeks to finalize tier-one transfer agreements before regional roster lock deadlines. Meanwhile, the gutted DRX organization must regroup for the Korean Challengers Split 1 open qualifiers scheduled for late March 2026, launching an arduous qualification journey through Ascension to earn their top-flight status back.
